The NC 54 corridor is a gateway for our region with both local and regional importance. The area continues to be an attractive location and to experience growing development pressure. This development pressure coupled with congestion and multi-modal mobility issues led government agencies, including the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO), the City of Durham, Durham County, and the Town of Chapel Hill, to initiate a process to create a master plan. The DCHC MPO Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) approved the resulting NC 54/I-40 Corridor Study Report on May 9, 2012. The DCHC MPO has included many of the recommended roadway, transit, bicycle and pedestrian improvements in the adopted 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP).
